At 22, Grant's loved ones feared he was heading to an early grave – DMC helped him to turn his life around, and he's now one of our top personal trainers!

My name is Grant Mclachlan, I am 22 years old and a chef from the Southside of Glasgow. When I left school at 16, I found myself working long hours and spending what little time I had, drinking heavily and smoking.

Over the next five years I gradually put on weight leaving me with little confidence and really unhappy with myself. I always wanted to join a gym or start some sort of exercise programme, but I was too embarrassed as well as always claiming to have “little time” when really I was just scared.

At the beginning of March 2009, my older sister made me aware that she and my parents were worried about my weight gain, drinking and smoking. My sister told me that she had a friend who was a personal trainer and a cage fighter who had offered to train me and increase my fitness. I was still a bit skeptical because even though it was one to one training, I was still embarrassed about how I looked.

It was then she explained his story, telling me how he used to be like me and turned his life around. This really did it for me and that guys name is Davie! The next day I got a call from him to see if wanted to come down for an hour long free session, to see if I liked it. He explained on the phone that we would get some tunes on, do some boxing and have a laugh. After that first session I was hooked and it has become the best part of my week.

After fifteen weeks, that’s fifteen hours training with Davie at the gym, following his advice and carrying out personalised circuit training, I have lost two stone in body fat and feel great. I am now a keen boxer and am looking forward to developing my skills with Davie.

My diet before I started training was terrible. I would snack on anything lying around the kitchen (usually chips) throughout the day. I would then finish work, have a few pints, gins, packets of crisps and nuts, then go home and have a pizza at two in the morning.

Now I am eating twice as much, but I have the knowledge of what to eat and when to eat it. Eating right really is half the battle.

If I had not met Davie I can honestly say I was heading for an early grave. Sounds pretty dark but it is true. I could not imagine life without training, as it has improved all aspects of it. I can’t thank Davie enough for the way in which he has turned my life around.
