DMC helped Kirsty recover from knee injuries and restored her love of exercise

Before DMC
After DMC

Serious injury cut short Kirsty's netball career. At DMC, she discovered a passion for kettlebell sport and within a year, won gold in two national competitions.

Having been active all my life and playing competitive netball throughout my teens, I was gutted to have to give up one of my biggest passions following two serious injuries that I accumulated from the sport I loved. After undergoing reconstruction of my patella tendon in 2011, I was left inactive for several weeks, in which time I saw my weight creep up and my energy levels and enthusiasm for sport diminish. The initial rehabilitation period was frustrating and I hated not being able to exercise.

As soon as I was allowed to start training again, I got in touch with DMC Fitness. I had trained briefly with Davie in the past after he was recommended to me by a friend, but netball had always remained my priority, and I didn’t 100% commit myself to my DMC programme. As a result, I hadn’t achieved the results that I was capable of. However, now with netball out of the picture, a knee that needed to be nursed back to full fitness and room for a new passion to develop, I was optimistic that DMC could help me to achieve my goals and restore my love of exercise.

I can honestly say that coming back to DMC was one of the best decisions I have ever made. In the time I had been away, DMC had taken up new residency, and as soon as I walked in to the new gym, I was inspired. I was immediately excited to get back into training and commit myself to getting back to full fitness. I explained my injury and the procedure that I’d had, and filled Davie in on what I had been advised at post-operative physiotherapy. His positivity and enthusiasm is infectious, and after our chat, I was determined that I was going to achieve great things this time around. He put me in the capable hands of Pablo, who had more experience in rehabbing injuries of this nature, and I have never looked back. Each week, we worked on gradually strengthening my knee and just over a year later, the only reminder I have of my surgery is a scar.

I am now stronger and fitter than I have ever been, and look on my training as a way of life as opposed to just doing it out of obligation to stay fit. Aside from providing me with a training programme tailored to my specific needs, I am also so much more clued in about what to eat and what not to eat in order to achieve the results I want thanks to DMC. It’s amazing how small changes to your lifestyle can have such a positive impact.

I am much more energetic, positive and determined than I ever have been before and can’t wait to see what the future holds for me. I’ve achieved things over the past year that I’d never have believed I was capable of. I’m more excited walking into the gym now than I ever was to walk onto the netball court. Plus, coming back led me to find a new hobby in kettlebell sport. In less than a year, I’ve won gold in the 12kg category in 2 major UK competitions and was Absolute runner up at the Welsh Open in October 2012.

It’s true that a little bit of work goes a long way – committing myself a little more to my training and adopting a healthier lifestyle has led me to be a much happier person. It’s a great feeling to get so many positive compliments on your appearance, and even better being able to throw about weights that most guys you know wouldn’t have a hope of lifting! I still have work to do to get where I want to be in terms of my fitness and results, but I am getting there much quicker than I was before and know that I wouldn’t have gotten as far as I have already without Davie, Julie and the rest of the crew.
