Training For Warriors Certification. Martin Rooney

Being in the company of Martin Rooney is infectious whether standing out front delivering lectures or bugged-eyed and buzzing coaching you training the man is energy personified. With an easy-going manner, he stood addressing the room, teaching us, encouraging us, and sharing the stories of his life and his luck.

Last weekend the DMC Crew and I headed back to Energy Gym in Edinburgh to see my dear friend Rannoch Donald and for us all to take part in the Training For Warriors Certification. The course was delivered by and we were all under the instruction of Martin Rooney MHS, PT, CSCS, NASM for the whole weekend.

The energy gym hall holds some great memories for me.  It is the place I did my first certification back in 2008.  It’s also where I have met and became friends with some awesome coaches and great people. Steve Cotter, Mike Mahler, Ken Blackburn, Jason Dolby, and now Martin Rooney have all taken the stage there and delivered exceptional seminars/certifications.  From each and every time I came away learning more and thinking differently.

This weekend was no different I learned so much and had so many “light bulb moments”. I could have sat there for days listening to Martin.  He inspired and impressed upon us that if we want to be more we have to do more.  He is so passionate about what can be achieved in life when we put some drive, determination, and passion into it. A total believer that fitness is the vehicle to take you towards your dreams and goals. Something I also believe in 100%

There are many things I learned from Martin, he is a quality fitness information provider of the highest degree. With open heart honesty, he discussed his mistakes, where he went wrong, how he fixed them, and what the outcomes were.

He encouraged us to think out of the box especially when it comes to fitness information, just because it’s been written and passed around the net doesn’t make it true.

He opened my eyes to where I need to be better in all aspects of my life, as a father, coach, and exerciser. When he asked the room “do you know your purpose in life, what is your mission?” I was proud to say inside myself yes I do.

“Don’t just be ordinary, be extraordinary”

In certain areas, it was like I was getting a VG and a big tick from the teacher because systems and procedures I have put into place in my company, the organisation, and the coaching of our students are all going in the right direction. Martin understands what it takes to build and grow a company, he has been there and done it all.

Martin has many sayings and anecdotes this one rang true with me

“Just because you feel tired doesn’t mean you have to act tired”.

It was as much a life coaching weekend as an improved athletic performance session. So many great ideas were shared. Easy to implement systems and procedures that will improve the quality of who you are, what you do, and the experience you deliver.

Already we are starting to measure new areas so that these can be managed correctly. Only yesterday one day after the course on implementing the advice given I am learning more about my students and how to improve them as people and their athletic performance.

The Martin Rooney weekend and the TFW Certification was an excellent way for me to finish what has been an amazing year. So much has happened and as we grow stronger and move into the start of a new year I am excited energised about what will happen next.

It’s time to let out the warrior within.
