Many people believe that walking doesn’t count as exercise. That’s rubbish. Some of Glasgow’s most awesome walking routes can burn 200–500+ calories while improving your heart health, reducing stress, and strengthening the muscles that keep you mobile for life.
At DMC Fitness, we’re always telling clients that movement is medicine. You don’t need to spend every workout in a gym to improve your fitness. In fact, a brisk walk through one of Glasgow’s parks or nature trails can be one of the most effective (and enjoyable) forms of exercise you’ll do all week.
Whether you’re looking to lose weight, improve your cardiovascular fitness, or simply clear your head after a busy day at work, these seven routes are well worth adding to your routine.

How many calories does walking actually burn?
The exact number depends on your body weight, pace, hills, and duration, but here’s a useful guide for a 75–85kg adult walking briskly:
| Walk duration | Estimated calories |
|---|---|
| 30 minutes | 140–190 kcal |
| 45 minutes | 210–290 kcal |
| 60 minutes | 280–390 kcal |
| Hilly 60-minute walk | 350–500+ kcal |
The hills and varied terrain on several of the routes below can increase the intensity without feeling like a traditional workout.
1. Kelvingrove Park Circular
Distance: 3–4 km
Time: 40–50 minutes
Calories: 180–260 kcal
Kelvingrove Park is one of Glasgow’s most iconic green spaces, and it’s perfect if you’re short on time. The combination of gentle hills, riverside paths and beautiful Victorian landscaping makes it feel more like a countryside escape than the middle of the West End.
Why we love it:
- Centrally located
- Ideal before or after work
- Plenty of elevation to raise your heart rate
- Easy to extend into the Botanic Gardens
DMC tip: Walk the hills rather than avoiding them. Inclines recruit more glutes and burn noticeably more energy than flat ground.
2. Pollok Country Park Woodland Trail
Distance: 5–7 km
Time: 60–90 minutes
Calories: 320–450 kcal
If there were an award for Glasgow’s most peaceful walk, Pollok Country Park would be hard to beat. Ancient woodland, riverside paths, and even the famous Highland cattle make this a favourite among our coaching team.
The varied terrain naturally creates intervals of higher and lower intensity, making it excellent for improving fitness.
Best for: Weekend recovery walks and family outings.
3. Glasgow Green & River Clyde Loop
Distance: 5 km
Time: 60 minutes
Calories: 250–340 kcal
This flat, scenic route follows the River Clyde before looping back through Glasgow Green. It’s an excellent option for beginners or anyone returning to exercise after a break.
Because the paths are smooth and uninterrupted, it’s surprisingly easy to maintain a brisk pace—which is where the calorie burn really adds up.
Challenge yourself: Aim for a pace where you can still talk, but singing would be difficult.
4. Linn Park Gorge Walk
Distance: 4–6 km
Time: 60 minutes
Calories: 280–380 kcal
Linn Park is one of Glasgow’s hidden gems. The woodland trails and dramatic gorge provide a completely different experience from the city’s larger parks.
Expect uneven terrain, gentle climbs, and plenty of opportunities to improve balance and ankle stability—something that’s especially valuable as we get older.
Mobility benefit: Natural trails challenge the smaller stabilising muscles that flat pavements rarely use.
5. Cathkin Braes Climb
Distance: 5–8 km
Time: 75–90 minutes
Calories: 400–550 kcal
Want the biggest calorie burn on this list? Head for Cathkin Braes.
The climbs are enough to elevate your heart rate into an excellent cardiovascular training zone without needing to run. On a clear day, the views across Glasgow are worth every step.
Perfect for: Anyone wanting to build fitness while protecting their joints.
6. Forth & Clyde Canal Towpath
Time: 60–120 minutes
Calories: 300–500 kcal
Canal walking is incredibly underrated. The towpaths are largely flat, making them ideal for maintaining a consistent brisk pace over longer distances.
It’s also one of the easiest routes for tracking progress—simply walk a little further each week.
Progression idea:
- Week 1: 45 minutes
- Week 2: 55 minutes
- Week 3: 60 minutes
Small increases produce meaningful fitness gains.
7. Mugdock Country Park Adventure Loop
Time: 90–120 minutes
Calories: 420–600 kcal
Just outside Glasgow, Mugdock offers forests, lochs, wildlife, and historic ruins in one spectacular walk.
If your goal is burning calories without feeling like you’re exercising, this is probably the winner. The constantly changing scenery makes longer walks feel much shorter.
Bring: Good walking shoes—the woodland paths can become muddy after rain.
Which route is right for you?
| Goal | Best walk |
|---|---|
| Beginner | Glasgow Green |
| Stress relief | Pollok Country Park |
| Highest calorie burn | Cathkin Braes |
| After-work walk | Kelvingrove Park |
| Nature & wildlife | Mugdock |
| Improve balance | Linn Park |
| Long steady fitness walk | Canal Towpath |
Why walking is one of the smartest exercises after 40
Many people believe they need high-intensity workouts to lose weight or improve fitness. The reality is that consistency beats intensity for most adults.
Regular brisk walking can help:
- Improve heart health
- Lower blood pressure
- Support fat loss
- Increase daily calorie expenditure
- Reduce stress and improve mood
- Maintain mobility and joint health
Better still, it’s something almost everyone can do regardless of fitness level.
Make it even more effective
If you want to turn these walks into powerful fat-burning sessions, try this simple method:
- Walk briskly for 5 minutes.
- Increase your pace for 2 minutes.
- Return to your normal pace for 3 minutes.
- Repeat throughout the walk.
This gentle interval approach increases cardiovascular fitness without the impact of running.
Final thoughts
Glasgow is packed with incredible places to walk, and you don’t need expensive equipment or hours in the gym to benefit. A 60-minute brisk walk a few times each week can make a genuine difference to your health, energy, and mobility.
At DMC Fitness, we encourage our members to think beyond formal workouts. Your daily movement matters just as much as your training sessions—and these routes are a fantastic place to start.
